From her own practice in Costa Rica, Dr. Marissé Masís Solano witnessed a heartbreaking pattern. Patient after patient arrived with advanced cataracts, glaucoma, and corneal damage—conditions that could have been prevented with earlier detection. Many had waited months for appointments, traveled hours from rural areas, or simply couldn't afford regular eye care.

As an ophthalmologist with 15 years of experience, Marissé knew that half of all blindness cases were preventable. Yet the system was failing millions worldwide. With only one ophthalmologist for every 17,000 people in the US—and far fewer in developing nations—the traditional model of eye care simply couldn't scale.
